Trauma-informed therapy
EMDR therapy in Melbourne, at your pace.
When a past experience still feels active in the present, EMDR may offer a structured way to work with it.
Preparation and psychological safety come first. You remain involved in decisions about the focus, timing and speed of the work.
Appointments may be available in Essendon North, Footscray and by telehealth across Victoria, depending on clinical fit.

The basic idea
What is EMDR therapy?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It is a structured psychological therapy often used in trauma and PTSD treatment.
During EMDR, a person may briefly bring a target memory, image, body sensation or belief to mind while using bilateral stimulation such as eye movements, tapping or tones.
The goal is not to erase memory. Therapy may help an experience feel less raw, less present and less connected to an old threat response.
Some people consider EMDR when:
- memories still affect sleep, mood, relationships or a sense of safety;
- triggers feel larger than the present situation; or
- insight has not shifted fear, shame, guilt or avoidance.
Safety before processing
A phased EMDR process.
EMDR is not about moving straight into the hardest material. Early work may focus on understanding symptoms, building grounding skills and deciding whether memory processing is suitable now.
1. Assessment and fit
Explore current concerns, history, goals, stability and what may make therapy safer or harder.
2. Preparation
Develop grounding, emotion regulation and a clear plan for pausing or slowing the work.
3. Target selection
Choose a memory, image, body sensation, belief or current trigger to work with.
4. Processing and review
Work in contained periods, with time for closure, review and adjustment between sessions.
You can ask questions, pause, slow down or change direction. Therapy should not feel like something being done to you.
Clinical fit matters
Who might consider EMDR?
EMDR may be considered for adults affected by trauma memories, distressing experiences, attachment injuries, anxiety responses, shame, guilt or body-based threat reactions.
It may also form part of broader therapy for repeated or complex trauma. More preparation may be needed around safety, relationships, emotional regulation and current supports.
EMDR is not automatically the first step. When life feels unstable or current safety is uncertain, therapy may begin with stabilisation and practical support.

Before you begin
Common questions about EMDR.
Do I have to describe everything in detail?
Not necessarily. EMDR works with target memories or triggers, but preparation, consent and pacing matter. Detailed trauma material does not need to be rushed.
How many EMDR sessions will I need?
The number of sessions depends on your goals, history, current supports and whether the concern involves a single event or more complex patterns.
Can EMDR help with complex trauma?
EMDR may be used as part of therapy for complex trauma, often with more preparation and attention to safety, relationships, emotional regulation and self-beliefs.
Is EMDR available by telehealth?
Telehealth EMDR may suit some clients depending on assessment, privacy, safety, technology and the work being considered.
Can sessions be provided in Cantonese or Mandarin?
Sessions may be available in English, Cantonese or Mandarin.
A practical first step
Ask whether EMDR may fit.
You can ask about current availability, preparation, location or whether another therapy approach may be a better starting point.
Ask about fit, availability or the next practical step. Please do not include detailed clinical history.
