What to Expect in Therapy
Therapy can offer a steady place to understand patterns, build practical skills, and work toward change at a pace that feels safe enough to continue.
At Breathe-n-Smile Psychology, therapy is collaborative rather than one-size-fits-all. Support may focus on trauma, anxiety, mood concerns, attachment patterns, ADHD, autism, burnout, or major life transitions.
Sessions may be available in English, Cantonese, or Mandarin, with appointments in Essendon North, Footscray, and via secure telehealth across Victoria.
A Trauma-Informed and Neurodivergent-Affirming Approach
Therapy works best when the process respects your history, nervous system, culture, communication style, and goals.
ACT-informed therapy
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or ACT, can help you notice difficult thoughts and feelings without letting them control every choice. Therapy may focus on values, psychological flexibility, and small actions that support a more meaningful life.
EMDR therapy
EMDR therapy may support some clients to process distressing memories or trauma-related beliefs. At Breathe-n-Smile Psychology, EMDR is paced carefully, with preparation and stabilisation before deeper trauma processing is considered.
Therapy is not about forcing disclosure. You remain in control of the pace. You can ask questions, pause, slow down, or spend more time building safety and coping strategies before discussing painful material in detail.
What Happens in the First Sessions?
The first sessions usually focus on understanding what brings you to therapy and what would make the work feel useful, respectful, and safe enough to begin.
Understanding your context
We explore current concerns, history, strengths, stressors, supports, and what you hope therapy may help with.
Building safety and direction
Therapy may include grounding strategies, emotional regulation skills, and a shared plan for how to move forward.
Choosing the right focus
Together, we identify whether ACT, EMDR, trauma-informed CBT, schema-informed work, or another approach may fit best.
Ongoing Therapy and Capacity Building
Ongoing therapy may involve practical skill-building, deeper emotional work, trauma processing, or support with identity, relationships, and daily functioning.
Therapy may focus on:
- understanding nervous system patterns and triggers
- building regulation skills for difficult emotions
- working with self-critical or stuck beliefs
- processing trauma memories when appropriate
- creating practical changes in work, study, relationships, or routines
