When we experience overwhelming stress or trauma, the brain’s natural coping mechanisms can become overloaded. The memory, along with the intense emotions and physical sensations associated with it, becomes “stuck” in the nervous system.

How Does EMDR Work?

EMDR does not rely on extensive talk therapy. Instead of analyzing the details of a distressing event, EMDR targets how the memory is stored in the brain.

During a session, the clinician will guide you to briefly focus on a specific aspect of a traumatic memory while simultaneously applying Bilateral Stimulation (BLS). This is typically achieved through guided eye movements, auditory tones, or physical tapping.

This dual attention task taxes the working memory and stimulates the brain’s information processing system. It allows the brain to reprocess the memory so it is no longer emotionally highly charged, transforming it from a current, active threat into a standard, historical memory.
