They may reflect how two neurodevelopmental profiles interact with your environment, energy, learning history and current demands.

What Does AuDHD Mean?

Plain answer: AuDHD is a community term for being both autistic and having ADHD. It is not a separate third diagnosis.

Clinically, autism and ADHD remain two diagnoses, and current diagnostic systems allow a person to meet criteria for both. The shorter term can still be useful because a combined experience may not make sense when autism and ADHD are discussed separately.

However, sharing some traits does not automatically mean that both diagnoses apply. Sleep problems, anxiety, trauma, depression, learning differences and prolonged stress can also affect attention, social energy, routines and emotional regulation. A careful assessment looks at development, context and daily impact rather than relying on one questionnaire.

What Does Newer Research Say?

2026 review

Overlap does not mean “the same condition”. Autism and ADHD share some features but also remain distinct. You might want a clear plan but find it difficult to follow. You might crave novelty, then feel overloaded when too much changes.

These patterns do not mean you are inconsistent or “not autistic enough” or “not ADHD enough”.

Careful assessment should check whether apparent ADHD symptoms are better explained by autism or another factor.[1]

5,504 adults
The two profiles remained distinguishable. A large 2024 study found that attention-control traits connected them, although cognitive testing did not fully explain the overlap.[2]

2026 evidence
Executive function and emotional regulation matter across profiles. However, too few studies directly compared the combined group, so personalised conclusions remain more useful than broad assumptions.[3]

A Mixing-Desk Analogy for AuDHD

Think of a mixing desk, not two separate boxes

A mixing desk has several channels feeding the same final sound. Autism-related needs, ADHD-related needs, sensory load, sleep, stress and the environment can each change the mix.

On one day, the “predictability” and “sensory sensitivity” channels may be loud. On another, “novelty”, “restlessness” or “difficulty starting” may dominate. Turning one channel up can also change how the others are experienced.

This analogy is imperfect, as all analogies are. Its value is that it moves us away from asking, “Which condition caused this exact behaviour?” Sometimes the more helpful question is, “What combination of needs and demands is shaping this moment?”

Common AuDHD Push-Pull Patterns

Not every AuDHD person experiences these patterns. However, some adults describe tensions such as:

Routine and inconsistency
Predictability may feel regulating, while planning, remembering and repeating the routine may remain difficult.
Novelty and overwhelm
New ideas may feel energising, while unexpected change, uncertainty or sensory input becomes exhausting.
Deep focus and switching
A meaningful interest may hold attention for hours, while starting, stopping or moving to another task feels disproportionately hard.
Connection and recovery
You may enjoy people and conversation, yet need substantial recovery from monitoring cues, managing impulses or processing sensory information.

Masking can make these patterns harder to see. In a 2025 survey of 1,056 young adults with ADHD, autism or both, masking varied by context. Participants described both strengths and challenges.[4]

Perceiving benefits in neurodivergence was associated with better quality of life. This was an association, not proof that positive thinking alone improves wellbeing.

Late recognition can be especially complicated for women and people whose culture, family expectations or language shaped how they learned to hide difficulties.

A small 2024 qualitative study of six late-diagnosed AuDHD women described the burden of masking and the value of trauma-informed support after diagnosis.[5] Because the study was small, it offers lived-experience insight rather than a description of everyone.

How to Make Sense of Your Own Profile

Instead of building another symptom list, try making a short personal operating manual.

Four questions to answer

1. What reliably overloads me?
Consider noise, uncertainty, interruption, social monitoring, too many steps or competing demands.

2. What helps me begin?
Examples may include interest, urgency, another person, a visible first step or reduced sensory load.

3. What helps me stay regulated?
Think about movement, predictability, quiet, clear expectations, preferred sensory input or recovery time.

4. What looks inconsistent but serves a need?
For example, changing activities may restore attention, while repeating a familiar meal may reduce decision and sensory load.

Look for conditions, not character flaws. “I can focus when the task is interesting and the room is quiet” gives you more useful information than “I am lazy unless I feel like it”.

When Assessment or Therapy May Help

An adult autism or AuDHD assessment may help when these patterns have been present across development and affect work, study, relationships, self-care or wellbeing. Australian ADHD and autism guidance recommends considering co-occurring conditions and the person’s broader developmental and functional picture.[6]

Assessment is not the only useful path. Neurodivergent-affirming therapy may focus on reducing shame, understanding sensory and executive needs, recovering from masking, improving communication, or developing realistic supports. The aim is not to remove harmless autistic or ADHD traits. It is to make daily life more workable.

Exploring whether autism and ADHD may both be relevant?

Breathe-n-Smile Psychology offers adult autism, ADHD and AuDHD assessment and neurodivergent-affirming support in Essendon North, Footscray and via telehealth where appropriate.
Explore AuDHD Assessment Enquire First

Frequently Asked Questions

Is AuDHD an official diagnosis?

No. AuDHD is an informal term for co-occurring autism and ADHD. A clinician records autism and ADHD as separate diagnoses when a person meets criteria for both.

Can autism and ADHD traits look contradictory?

They can. A person might value predictability but struggle to maintain routines, or seek stimulation while also becoming overloaded. These experiences vary between people and situations.

Does identifying with AuDHD mean I have both diagnoses?

Not necessarily. Self-recognition can be a useful starting point, but formal assessment considers developmental history, current functioning, alternative explanations and whether diagnostic criteria are met.

References

Petruzzelli MG, et al.
